A Jack Russell Terrier dog is highly energetic and eager to assume dominance over their owners, which is why it’s extremely important to initiate their training immediately upon welcoming the pup into your home.  Keep in mind that this is a breed of dog bold enough to go after a fox, both above ground and through their efficient maneuvering through underground dens.  This dog hunts dogs and has a natural instinct to pick, stalk, chase and catch their prey.

If you allow a Jack Russell Terrier dog to assume dominance they will rule you and your household.  They will display a considerable amount of aggressiveness toward smaller defenseless household pets like cats, hamsters and gerbils.  The Jack Russell Terrier dog also has a fondness to bark loudly and dig frantically.  There is a great risk that they will destroy home furniture if they are not allowed to release this pent up energy outside.

A well-trained Jack Russell Terrier dog can become a wonderful family pet.  Their hyperactivity and instinct to hunt aside, a Jack Russell Terrier dog is good hearted, gentle and can become a fun playmate with small children because they are smart and able to easily pick up any game or trick.  A Jack Russell Terrier dog can be comfortable in either a suburban or rural setting but a country home with barns and horses would bring a Jack Russell Terrier dog great joy.  They love horses and going after pests like mice, rats and woodchucks.  Not to mention they have plenty of land to seek out their favorite spots to dig.

It’s important to gain dominance over your Jack Russell Terrier dog before they pick up difficult to break bad behavior.  A big part of training your Jack Russell Terrier dog is using voice commands.  Let out a forceful “NO!!!” if you notice your Jack Russell Terrier dog snapping and growling since these are signs of the dog establishing itself as the dominant force in the pack.  Any sign of aggressiveness needs addressed immediately.

The Jack Russell Terrier dog is extremely loyal and loves to be praised and fussed over.   Owning a Jack Russell Terrier is a lot of fun once the complications of training the dog are addressed.   You should get a kick out of their loyalty, boldness, energy level, assertiveness and positive mood.  Just keep in mind that failing in your training of a Jack Russell Terrier dog will leave you with quite the little devil to contend with!
